I noticed often in legends entries stating that someone, when they were a baby or child, was attacked by a monster, fought with it, and was defeated but escaped unscathed. How does that happen?

They didn't fight it, per se, but were around when it attacked. Presumably it came after them but someone rescued them. Or it burned down their house and left them for dead. Somehow, it escaped before any blows were landed.
