Masterwork: Hunting, brewing problems
« on: November 23, 2013, 05:41:05 am »

Hello,

I recently decided to download Masterwork Mod. I am experiencing problems that occur on and off.

My hunters will not hunt.
They are equipped with Crossbow and Quiver and my craftdward is churning out bolts by the 100's. So everything is there. It is only sometimes that they start to hunt and then catch nothing and then they simply stop functioning. I than make another dwarf a hunter. He/she equips themself and then do nothing :(. I have made 10 crossbows and 10 quivers and made 10 dwarfs hunters. All stay as no job.

I then abandoned fortress and in the new fortress after some time the hunter stopped working . I then changed another dwarf to a hunter and it picked up a Javelin Thrower (do not know what it is, no documentation anywhere about this object) so I figued I had to make javelins, which I did. But the dwarf never picked up these javelins.

What on earth should I do to get my hunters to hunt ?!?!?!?!?!

Brewer seems to face a sort of bug. I have a wild blue berry farm. Many blueberry's in stock. Many barrels. It then says "no distillable item" or it just stops after distilling 4 blueberries or so, forcing me to constantly look after the distellery to make sure it keeps on working :(

Anyone else facing these challenges on masterwork mod?

firstly is their anything to hunt?
a javelin thrower is basically a bigger more powerful crossbow i think it organically came from Legends of forlorn realms mod
do you actually have blue berries in stock? or haven't they grown yet.

masterwork shouldn't mess with hunting and brewing and they should work like they do in vanilla

also consider moving this to the masterwork mod thread

Yes there is plenty to hunt .... about 16 dingos on the map and no river blocking access.

Blue berries are in stock.

Moving? I guess to late for that :p

I also thought Masterwork should not interfere with vanilla.

One more questions, what do javelins need, a quiver or something else?

I love the mod. Just abandoned that fortress btw and am starting a new one :p

You'll probably get better answers posting in the section for the masterwork mod.

1: Masterwork, however well made, is a modification of a game, some problems do happen. It is also a modification of a game that in itself has quite a number of bugs and weird stuff. That being said, it shouldn't interfere too much with the basics as far as I know. The people from the Masterwork Mod probably know more on that issue

you could try using the manager and the kitchen menu for the brewing. Just set only those plants you want brewed allowed for rewing and use the manager to do "brew drink x30" a few times. No need to add the jobs yourself, all automatic.

A javelin thrower, aside from being a crossbow that launches javelins instead of bolts, can refer to a tool used to help throw javelins further and more accurate. It's basically a length of wood or similar material or a sling on which the javelin rests. When thrown, the tool effectively makes the arm longer, increasing leverage and thus power. Since the javelin isn't held in the hand anymore during the throw, a lot of errors are eliminated (such as a slight push with either the index finger or the thumb in a wrong direction, altering the throw), making it more accurate with less training than a regular javelin throw.

also see the aztec atlatl or the aboriginal woomera according to some sites

look at people with those ball throwers for their dogs for the same principle

historically a javelin is more of a small spear than a large arrow: rather than a quiver, as many as 4 or 5 javelin's could be held in the 'off' hand but loading the javelin into the thrower is 2 handed job.  None of which has any bearing on how it works in DF

Make sure you are crafting the correct ammo (bots and not arrows, since you are using crossbows ), go into military screen, ammo and asign the ammo for hunting.

Had the same problem and after some tinkering found that my wooden piercing bolts and bone piercing bolts where not listed as ammo for the hunters to use. Just adding them to the list worked fine.

And if they have herbalist listed as job, they will often ignore animals and keep harvesting plants.
