Atom smashing --> ghosts?
« on: November 22, 2013, 09:53:19 am »

Will atom smashing dwarves still result in ghosts? And if so, I assume the only way to put them to rest is slabs, right?

I am doing some ghostly science, and I want to find the most efficient way of making migrants into ghosts.

It should, yes. Only one way to find out though :D

Yes, I believe ghosts run by rule "not appeased unless specified otherwise" so no matter what happens to body, as long as it's not in coffin, it might create ghosts. Doesn't mean it will.

And of course you gonna need a slab.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

Absolutely and yes.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

Ok, thanks. Assured of this fact, it is now time to commence SCIENCE!

What's the project?  The experimental protocol?

What hypotheses are you testing?  When ghosts are a by-product, the research must at least be interesting.

I wanted to test if fell moods actually could use ghosts instead of dwarves, making ghostly weapons/armor, and testing if (unlikely) these had different properties than regular bone/leather.

I made each of my starting seven their own lockable work area, with access to a food pile, stocked by two farmers, but I wanted to make sure atom smashing would create ghosts before I went any further. I plan to keep everyone just barely unhappy, through constructing/deconstructing their bedroom decorations, dining rooms, etc., and in emergencies, toggling a waterfall, and then as soon as one of them goes Fell, locking their door and hoping one of the ghosts will drift into their room. Unfortunately, a macabre mood is also a possibility, so I will keep some dead things on hand.

All migrants will be atom smashed, to create as many ghosts as possible, and the violent ones will be slabbed.

I will also try and note which personality attributes become which kind of ghost, to see if there's a connection.

However, I probably won't be able to do this anytime soon, so the research will likely not be posted for quite a while. If anyone else wants to conduct this experiment in the mean time, I would greatly encourage it.

Instead of hopeing a ghost drifts into the room of the moody dwarf I would sugest initialy locking him in his room.  Move all the other dwarves into an area that can be sealed off from wherever ghosts are. and then opening the door to the moody dwarf so he can go off and grab the ghost.

Also dont forget that you need 20 or so dwarves before moods start up.

I wonder... what happens when you drop a bridge on a ghost?

Nothing at all, the ghost will stay where it is.

Good idea. I was planning to build the atom smasher on the surface, but that would eliminate the usefulness of forlorn haunts. Thanks for the tip.
