Resolved: Dwarves Won't do Jobs
« on: November 18, 2013, 10:12:23 pm »

I'm new to this game, having only started playing yesterday, and not even for very long then. I've spent an hour or two today setting up my first little fort underground, but I've run into a problem. I set up an idle area a few z levels underground where all my dwarves and animals are hanging out. However, my dwarves are being lazy. Whenever I tell the dwarves to go to the surface and cut down some trees, they don't do anything. It isn't the staircase that leads to the top level of the underground base, because my miners can move up it, and the surface is just one layer above that level. I made sure I had an area for the stockpile for wood, and the two dwarves have the labor of Wood Cutting set. I'm including picture links so it's clearer. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have an axe?

I don't seen anything wrong with the map, but make sure your dwarfs can get outside.  Designate one of the slopes up top to be flattened with d-z and see if a miner runs up there and does it.

If you didn't bring an axe, here's what you can do.   Use Q to hover over the wagon and deconstruct it.  That will give you 3 logs.  Use one log to make a carpenters shop and then another to make a wooden axe.  Then you should be able to chop trees.

I brought a copper axe, yes. I'll try the slope thing now.

If you post a save I'll take a look at it.  If you zip up your region1 directory (under data/save) you can upload it to dffd.

Okay, so the dwarves can't reach the surface. No miners went to the surface to flatten the slope.

try getting rid of that slope on 136 that looks like it's blocking the open doorway.  You didn't mess around with burrows yet, did you?  (w)

I tried clearing the slopes on the surface. It won't let me reach them. I cleared the three by three of slopes on the bottom floor except for one as well, but that didn't work either. And no, I haven't used burrows.

I see the problem, the up-slopes are blocked up above.  See if you can dig a new exit.  Dig an up-stair into a wall on 136, then designate a down-stair on the tile above it.  It might not let you dig the down-stair if you can't path to the location above, so you might be stuck.

Upload to http://dffd.wimbli.com/.  Just let me know where you put it.

No problem.  Slopes can be tricky.  In order to have an upslope that works, the bottom part has to be adjacent to a wall, and the top part of that wall has to be a clear floor.  If that makes sense.

a slope doesn't need a clear floor adjectant on the level above, a further up slope works fine too, creating a continuous slope. The problem was that the only exit on the surface also had the corridor underneath. When climbing up a slope, the tile they're climbing up to needs to be supported by a wall. The way I think of it is that the slope needs to lean against something to work.

this works:

this doesn't

This is true.
