I'm making a fireproof suit.
« on: November 11, 2013, 03:01:20 pm »

Thanks to the scale-to-leather mod and the skin glob mod, I now have sixteen tanned dragon scales, as well as a stack of dragon bones. As you know, dragon body parts are [FIREIMMUNE_SUPER], so I'm going to make a suit of dragonscale (and possibly also dragon bones) and see if it protects a dwarf from magma.

Will a robe be enough coverage? And should I make some dragonbone armor?

If I recall, the last time someone attempted something like this resulted in one magma-roasted dwarf-in-a-blanket due to the eyes being exposed.

Robes still leave the hands, feet and head uncovered (while still protecting toes and fingers, curiously). See the chart at the bottom of the Wiki Armor Coverage section for more data on clothing/armor coverage.

You won't find anything with coverage more complete than robes, so You'll need some additional equipment for full coverage: an article of handwear, footwear and headwear, to be exact. Example: Gloves, shoes and a hood

Edit: Theoretically, eyes are covered by robes along with all other facial features

Ok true magma proofing is inpossable, you have two main paths
A) Insulate the dwarf and try to keep them cool, so rap them in asbestosdragon scale and Nether-cap, to cool them down.
B) Burn of the fat from the dwarf so thay can survive short dips, but long dips will burn bones or lungs.

Been there, tried that. Dragonscale armor protects against fireballs, but not agains breath type attacks. It will leave one toasted dwarf and a set of not even slightly damaged armor. Nether-cap is a nice idea, I have never tried that. However, I don't know any way to make wooden armor outside of arena... Artefacts maybe?

I think if you would allow elven civilisations to access nether cap logs at world gen would make their caravans carry nether cap clothes and armor to your fort every year.

Alternatively, if you are modding...

If we're modding, then why not make pig tails fireproof and give them a fixed temperature... then cloth dwarves in arena mode and spawn them in lava?

Why not just make dwarfs naturally magma-proof.

For a full fireproof suit, you'll only need a bunch of lucky fell moods...

What I don't think a lot of people are remembering is that Nether-cap is a tree, not a generic plant. Shields are the only "armor" which could be produced from it by means of reactions (workshops and moods). The only way that the tag could be utilized in a helpful way is through modding. I was thinking making the dragonscale armor have the constant temperature.

Modding would be required for this goal, so try to make as few modifications as possible, and keep them minor.

Huh. I have tested nether-cap armor in Arena. It burned. Either arena is bugged, or nether-cap is magmaproof as a building, but not fireproof as an item.

It wont work, the clothing/armor itself will be fireproof, but the dwarf inside still dies.
