When is Grazer value referenced? [RESOLVED]
« on: November 21, 2013, 02:25:42 pm »

In an effort to make the elephants on my map keepable, I changed their [grazer] value (both in the raw folder and in the save folder) to 60. However, my first elephant gradually began to starve, despite being the only animal in a max-sized pasture covered in dense vegetation. I then changed the number to 85, though I wasn't sure if this would affect my existing elephant. He's still starving.

I'm not 100% sure whether I made the first change before or after my elephant spawned on the map; it was definitely before he was tamed, though.

So,

1) Does the grazer value for an individual animal get "locked in" only when that animal spawns?
2) Since I'm not sure whether I made the change before this individual elephant spawned, is there something else I could be overlooking?

60 and 85 are still very very low.  Try 500

Also,  just delete it and see if your Elephant starves.  That should answer your question about whether it is locked in.

Well I increased it to 2000, and the elephant successfully fed itself from "starving" to "hungry" to normal. So, two things learned:

1) [GRAZER] value does not "lock in" on a creature when it spawns, and
2) The figures on the wiki for minimum pasture sizes are quite wrong for the larger animals.

Isnt the wiki right? Higher means less hunger... I give my grazers 3000 on average.

Isnt the wiki right? Higher means less hunger... I give my grazers 3000 on average.

The wiki says, for example, that a creature with Grazer 60 can sustain itself on a pasture 18x18. My elephant couldn't sustain itself (as a Grazer 60) on even a max-sized pasture. It didn't come close to running out of plants in the pasture, it just couldn't eat fast enough.

I'm experimenting with it at Grazer 200 right now. I'd like to find a number that lets the larger animals be appropriately difficult to keep, but not impossible.
