Embassies/In Fortress Diplomacy
« on: September 19, 2013, 06:56:43 pm »

I absolutley love DF, and the only thing I can think of to make it better is to have elves/dwarves/humans from other fortresses and hamlets arrive like a liason, and, though they wont work, they will kind of do things like the outpost liason, but not limited to what the liason can do. Like you can request aid during a siege, or send words of insult to the elves. It would also require a messenger job, but it would be excellent to not be so confined to your fortress and a single mountainhome/elven retreat/human hamlet, and have multiple. But it would be odd if they did trade caravans from different places. Perhaps you can choose which embassy sends caravans at what year? Just a suggestion :P

Ambassadors from civilizations that are opposed would be rude to one another and be envious of each other's embassies. They would try to turn your politicians to their own side and plant the seeds of distrust in the noble's court.

Also, how about taking in refugees from other civilizations?

i don't think embassy is the right word unless your fort is the capital.

in a smaller fort it might make sense for them to function more like agency houses or trading posts for the caravans. a dedicated room that you could haul goods to throughout the year and have the traders load up by themselves would negate the need to free up haulers three times a year, but would bring with it the risks associated with letting a foreign power into your fort. it would make the trade agreements more meaningful, since if you looked likely to fail to meet export targets the caravan agents could try to interfere with internal politics, bribe the manager to change production tasks, forcibly confiscate property or even take hostages. unhappy dwarves could also blame their problems on the foreigners and loot or torch the agency warehouses.

I'm particularly interested in the messenger part, as it would give your adventurers a possibility to do quests other than slaying this or that. You can even have time-based delivery missions, because DF adventurers apparently aren't screwed enough as it is now. :)

I agree with everything on this thread.  Having diplomacy happen in your fort would be awesome.  Also, varying the caravan arrival times more to reflect how far away the civilization is would be a change of a similar style.  Might even make diplomacy more interesting, if you favor one liason over another because their caravan arrives more frequently.
