Question about going up a level from where I embark
« on: November 05, 2013, 02:03:13 pm »

Hey guys, if I embark and I have some ramps that go down and I have some levels that go up and I want to make a room upstairs from my main tunnel when I first dig it how would I do that? I know to go down a level I would build a down stair and then every level after that I would build up/down stairs, but how do I go up and make a room or rooms on the level above me? I am a tad confused. I tried to lay an upstairs but for some reason it didn't work. Thanks...

Down stairs are made in the floor part of a tile, up stairs are made in the wall part. As such, your cannot create up stairs in open space unless you build them with, for instance, masonry. If you want to build up-stairs, either construct them or carve them out of a natural stone wall.

If you build an upstairs, you then need to build a downstairs from the level above it.  It's a little strange, but I think this is your issue.

Yes, if you have up stairs you can build down stairs right above them, even though tile is not revealed like it was when you carve down.

You need to select right designation, position it on your upstairs and move "camera" one level up, so pointer would be exactly above.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

b>C>u, which places an up stair that you construct out of blocks, stone, logs, soap, etc.

After it's been completed, b>C>d, hover that over the up stair you just built, then < to move one level upwards and place it.

After that, assuming you want to build a whole floor, b>C>w and make four walls around the lower level's up stairs and leave a gap for a door if you want one. It helps if the stairs are direct against one of the walls. Then, go to up a level to the down stairs. You should see the top of the wall, which on this level are basically floors. If you want a complete floor, you can build it, but if you are making a tower it might be better just to make one tile thick floors along the top of the lower level's walls (which are currently floors) so your dwarves have a perimeter to walk on while building the second level's walls. Remember to place the North or South, or the East and West walls first once you are off the ground before designating the other pair in order to prevent corners from not being built.

You can dig an up stair on the same z level you are on. Then build a DOWN stair on the level ABOVE that stair (i.e. the one you wanna reach).

If you want a different approach, you can use upward ramps by digging out one with r, I believe. Keep in mind that a ramp needs a wall behind it to be properly used.

Alternatively, channel one out with h if you want to go down.

This makes creating hallways that span multiple levels easier, and is normally a tiny bit easier to defend than a stair that goes straight from entrance to living quarters.
