Mouse keeps disconnecting...
« on: September 06, 2013, 05:55:03 pm »

So, I've had this problem for probably almost a month, now.
My wired, USB mouse will randomly disconnect and reconnect, with Windows(I'm running Win 7) telling me that the USB device is not recognized.
It seems to be caused by movement of the wire or the plug, thought I've tested this on several friends' computers and the mouse worked without error. It's not the USB drives themselves, because I tried it with my flash drive and it didn't suffer the same disconnecting problems my mouse does, even with gentle jiggling.
I've tried so many things I found from Google, including uninstalling the drivers and restarting my computer and telling the device manager not to turn off the USB hub to save power.
I started up my computer in Safe mode and the mouse still had the same issues. A couple of the above solutions only worked for a day or so.
Sometimes the mouse will completely flip out and disconnect and reconnect rapidly.

While all this is annoying, that's not the worst part. The worst part is how fucking grating the USB disconnect sound is. Every fucking time it disconnects, my computer makes the BUDUNK sound. BUDUNK BUDUNK. Constantly. While watching videos, not moving my laptop at all, BUDUNK BUDUNK. In the middle of a game of League, BUDUNK BUDUNK.(you have been slain)

I've asked in a few other place, but I got all the same answers that didn't work. This is incredibly budunking frustrating and any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: In case anymore wayward travelers find themselves here, looking for answers, here's how I eventually solved this problem: I got a new mouse. Yaay! The plug of the one I was using when I made this post was really dinged up and that's what was causing the problems I think!

Right click your Desktop.

Personalize.

Sounds.

Find "Device Connect" and "Device Disconnect" under the Windows section.

Change the drop menu at the bottom to "None."

As for why it disconnects....I dunno. Sounds like you've eliminated most of the possibilities. Who is the mouse manufacturer?

When you say the "USB drives"....do you mean the USB ports on a desktop computer? Or are you using a USB hub to connect stuff? The fact a flash drive doesn't exhibit the same problems as your mouse doesn't necessarily rule out a failing USB port. Does it do it from all USB ports on the computer?

The only other thing I can think is that there is a conflict between the driver software and your Windows install somewhere....but I'd have no clue where to begin troubleshooting that. The fact it wasn't happening before and now has started happening is also a factor worth considering.....have you tried rolling back to a restore point prior to when this started happening?

It's a Microsoft mouse.
Yeah, I mean USB ports. The mouse problems occur on all three of them and my flash drive worked fine on all three of the ports.
I've seen some people say it could have something to do with a Windows update, but I hadn't updated Windows until recently, about 2 to 3 days ago.
And also, my laptop is fairly new and I didn't set up a backup until recently...

I'd be really surprised if a Windows update borked your USB drives. Because you'd probably see the issue in more places than just your mouse.

If you've already screwed around with the drivers in the Device Manager, I've only really got two suggestions left.

1- Get any mouse and see if it has the same problems on your PC. If it doesn't, the issue is with your mouse and your version of Windows.

2- Re-install/update your motherboard drivers.

So it ends up it was my mouse, despite the fact it works perfectly on several other peoples' computers.
I don't have the money to get a new mouse, though, so I'll just have to deal with this apparently shitty one.

EDIT: Wait, nevermind, it's starting to happen on this other mouse I'm trying. The light under it seems to be flickering.

EDIT2: I might just do a system restore or something, because this thing with my mouse is the most annoying thing ever, but I've also have been getting this weird things were my input into certain games, like Minecraft or League of Legends, is severely delayed, the game will lag a lot, and my computer will make weird booping sounds.

I'm so desperate for anything that could help. This is completely unbearable to live with. I've even changed the USB disconnecting sound to something not completely obnoxious. Nothing I have found and tried works. I don't have a backup to before this problem. Everyone I've asked is completely stumped. I have no money to take my laptop in to a repair place or somewhere. Seriously...

My advice would be to reinstall your mobo drivers. That's the only root-level thing outside of windows that would govern your USB ports.

I'll go and try that now.
EDIT: I'm looking for the chipset drivers, right? I'm downloading it now.

This a prebuilt or one you built yourself?

It's prebuilt. Also, I don't think it worked, but I'm not sure if I got the right thing or if I did it right.

It could be a port power manangement issue.
For whatever brilliant reason, I seem to recall seeing/reading that windows now tries to help your ultra thin triscut based laptops and netbooks not peeter out after 15 minutes by enabling power management on the USB ports when the system sit idle. (Or however it FEELS is idle.)

Check in the device manager on the USB root hubs in the USB section and make sure that any BS options for power management are disabled. In wndows 7, it's the last tab of the properties page for the root hub, called "Power management'.  There's a checkbox that says "allow windows to turn off this device to save power."

Uncheck it.

Do that for all your root hub devices. That will keep windows from basically shutting the power off on the ports.

That's something I've already tried.

Have had same issue for a while and it seems doing a registry cleanup has been the solution, i recomend CCleaner!

Did OP get it fix'd?
