Does Slavery do anything?
« on: November 07, 2013, 11:31:45 pm »

I was just curious since recently an Elven caravan came around with 4 Tigermen (two swordsmen). Were they enslaved or was it a bug that they are a part of the Elven caravan as slaves? Is there any way I can get these un-civilized peoples to join my civ as slaves or not? Also I haven't seen any mention of slavery in either fortress or adventure mode :/

Tigermen have [PET], so elves can domesticate them.

At the moment multi-racial forts aren't possible outside of DFHack, so all they do is suck your food and drink from the river/murky pools, since they can't operate wells. They can't drink from barrels, for some reason.

Slavery doesn't work in Fort Mode, and it isn't encountered in Adventure Mode often, since the major slavers are goblins, and their forts aren't in yet. I've seen a few slaves in adventure mode, basically all you can do is free them, in which case they will behave like a normal follower. Their captors don't even react to you releasing them, in my experience.

Supposedly, a tigerman can actually become mayor, because they can learn social skills and they don't have anything to do other than stand around and talk.

Gremlins are also prone to this.

Very rarely in Adventure Mode I've found slaves in human fortresses, usually goblins. Other than that I don't think it does much.

Quick question: does transforming them into dwarves make them fully functional members of the fortress?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

If they are dwarves, they will act like dwarves, I believe. To my knowledge, the game checks for race when computing who does what, and compares it to the race your fort is set as.

I don't think they would, I think they would just be uncontrollable dwarves, like the way diplomats are.

What if the Tigerman fishing/hunting as a labor before they arrive at my fort? As they are idle-work will this not make them fish and hunt for me?

They should fish, but hunting requires a crossbow, which they cannot equip.

So there is no point in keeping them unless you want something to eat your food with no return dwarfpower...

I did emancipate a few tigermen in one fort with intent to make them into mayor, but didn't work.

I'm going to assume the great Toady One has plans for this eventually...
I just wonder how long it might theoretically take to implement...

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

They might also do Animal Training.
