A good headset for <50$?
« on: October 29, 2013, 04:47:26 am »

Doesn't seem like a question to be put in Life Advice section, so I figured I might as well do it here.

So it's no wonder than I am a gamer - and a rather avid one at that. And in this day and age, a headset (or a mic in general) is borderline mandatory, especially in games like TF2 (which frankly I haven't played a lot within the last few months, but still) and it's just plain good for stuff like talking over Skype, Mumble or what have you.

My previous set broke about six months ago after 6 months of use (well, the mic kind of works, but the rest not so much), and I feel like using the earbuds is kinda an odd substitute.
But now that I have quite a a bit of money to spend (receiving 200 złotys, or ~70$ a month from my grandparents on my bank account) I figured it'd be a good idea to invest into something a bit longer-term than Creeper World 3 or pledging 50$ to Awesomenauts: Starstorm on Kickstarter (via PayPal, but same thing).

It doesn't need to be anything super-fancy - unless having a mic counts as that somehow.
I'm by no means a hardware specialist, so I'm kind of forced to take your words in this case.

Also note that I live in Poland if that makes a difference (which it probably will when it'll come to shipment).

EDIT
Actually scratch my previous price range of 70$ - I forgot I spent another 20 bucks on my phone bill, so it's closer to 50$ instead. Keep that in mind.

My experience has been that headphones are much more important than the microphone, and so if you're on a budget and looking for quality, it's better to spring for decent headphones and a separate crappy mic. Stuff that's marketed as gaming equipment (like headsets) often seems to be lower quality, compared to similar things like headphones which also need to appeal to audiophiles and professionals. My mic is a Soviet surplus piece of crap kept together by masking tape and a toothpick spine, but I have an expensive set of headphones, and it makes all the difference. Unless you intend to record your voice, pretty much anything will do for talking with your friends. A good pair of headphones, on the other hand, can make almost any music/gaming sound amazingly good.

In the $70 range, though, I don't think much quality stuff is available (unless it's used, maybe). I'd save up $150 for a good pair of headphones, and use whatever for a mic, unless you're dead set on having the convenience of a headset.

I got a nice $20 headset from walmart that worked just fine for over two years.

Well, except the taint of evil from being purchased at walmart.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I bought this headset back in August and it's served me well since then: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FY7LBQ

Mic is clear, and on a flexible stick so it moves anywhere.  No complaints about comfort or sound quality.  I was between that one and a ~$90 pair, and I'm glad I saved my money, as the one I got serves my needs well.

It also has the bonus entertainment of a preview picture showing an asian girl supposedly using it to video chat with someone, with the microphone jack clearly unplugged.  She looks understandably confused  :P

Looks alright.
I might give it a shot if I don't find anything better.

Actually I was a bit wrong - my price range is actually somewhere on the order of 50$ (forgot that I spent another 20$ on my phone bill).
