You plopped that school WAY too early. Cut its spending, maybe even demolish, and lower and keep expanding.

Hospitals, firehouses and police should also be postponed, until they are actually needed.
No need to introduce unwanted expenses before you had the time to set up your economy.
First time I played these games, I went bankrupt with the first few years because of too much spending too early.

Edit: Also, when placing down lots, think big. Don't limit yourself to a tiny area.
Of course, you could if you wanted.. But you will get more tax money the more residents live in your city.

Edit2: Speaking of taxes, don't raise them yet. People generally don't like taxes, especially not this early.

Yeah, at this stage, you increase revenue by increasing lots.  An incremental approach is best: Add a bit, wait for it to mostly fill up, add more, etc.

And if you want horrible, horrible traffic issues, just place all your industry on one side of the island and all the homes on the opposite side of the island.  With only one road connecting them.  Instant traffic jam!

This is all just friendly advice.
It's fine if you choose not to follow them tough.

*eye twitches slightly*
The coal plant is probally overkill for right now.   I would suggest that you lower funding, and then making raising it as you expand.  Definitely expand your residential.

Oh yeah, that too. You have a fuckton of spare power right now, and a deficit. You need to turn the former into the means of fixing the latter.

Well imo the city is WAY too compact.
The general idea for a proper laout is Residence - Commercial - Industrial.
The sims leave home and go to the industrial district stopping on the way to work in the commerial district for shopping so placing industries right next to homes not only pisses people off (polution) but also wastes potentially profitable spots for commerce (those you would have if the factories were further away so they'd fit between housing and factories) and creates extra traffic because people have to explicitly go to a commercial area to do their shopping.

Having your residential area away from commercial building and factories also increases the efficiency of your schools hospitals ETC because factories/commerce gets no benefits from them and properly placed they will cover much more houses

Actually you can run a wholly Commerce-based city with not a single factory, as long as you get some factories first then phase them out as you introduce higher education.

Also, Agriculture is pretty good for a starting city, because it provides jobs for the uneducated and then provides plenty of space to expand to once you don't need it anymore at low cost.
