Is it possible for an adventurer to take over or run a town/city while in adventure mode?

Not currently but it is one of the planned goals if I remember correctly for a future version of DF.

I've heard of some people causing a zombie apocalypse in villages and towns with necromancers.

Yeah, but it's just as easy to cause a you apocalypse by head-stabbing people once you're legendary+5 with 4000 strength or w/e.

Although there is the issue of characters occasionally and inexplicably duplicating, meaning you could kill them and they'd reappear alive later.

Or you can recruit them into your party and then wait for a duplicate to appear, then have them fight to the death.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to get your companions to attack civilians. Your companions are always more loyal to their entities than they are to you.

Right, I forgot that they won't attack their own entity. You can have ZOMBIE clone battles though!

No, it is possible. The civilians just must be from a different civ than the companions. So if there is a two human civilizations, you can take companions from the other and attack to the other with your companions.

That's interesting; I have a different experience. I took soldier companions from one civilization and tried to raid a fortress of another civilization. My companions stood by doing nothing as I attacked the other soldiers. The enemy soldiers slaughtered me and my companions did nothing.

I think the only time your recruits will attack another civilization are when the civilizations themselves are at war.
