The Oregon Trail [Lordship on Wheels - 1840's]
« on: October 26, 2013, 11:04:32 pm »

Welcome to the America of the 19th century. Fertile land lays unused on the Pacific coast, ripe for the taking. You have given up your position as the mayor of the town Milford in Virginia, and have convinced three men, and one woman, of the town to come with you. There will be countless dangers and obstacles to get there, and you aren't even certain if you will survive when you do get there. Your name is Robert Stall, and you are about to embark on the greatest journey of your life.

January, 1840
The headline of the newspaper reads "Oregon - Land of Opportunity". The title catches your eye. Opportunity means change, no matter what. Life as a mayor is stagnant, especially in Virginia. You do what the governor says, and make the occasional decision. You decide to read on.

"Thousands are migrating to the great land of Oregon, with it's fertile land ripe for the taking. There is many a dollar to be made in the emerging state. Settlers seem to pour out of their homes to just hop onto one of the many wagon trains bound for the West. The stores are running low on stocks, and the people's stores are becoming fat for the adventure to become.

The road to this great land is not free of doubt, however. The west is not a settled land, and the only way to Oregon is through it. Savages roam the plains and mountains, massacring full parties of would-be settlers. Bandits are setting camps along the major roads, robbing the settlers free, to starve out in the god-forsaken land. Can you endure, to the great riches of Oregon?"

Immediately, you know what you must do. You must go to Oregon, and establish a new town, where you will not be controlled by a governor, or the federal government. By nightfall of that very day, you have four citizens willing to travel alongside you in the journey.

Joshua Moore, your greatest companion from birth. You have shared your lives together, and he immediately agreed to come along when you proposed the idea. He wouldn't miss this opportunity, and you honestly don't think you would have gone through with it if he hadn't come with you. His occupation is hunting. He brings his 1835 Springfield musket, and a barrel of musket balls to hunt with.

A farmer named Anderson Moore and his wife Sally also come, bringing four barrels of food and a barrel of rum. You personally supply the four oxen for two wagons, and have the wagons filled with barrels of food and water, a small portion of it being rum. You also bring a 1835 Springfield musket, so that you can help protect the wagons. You also bring your full savings, five-hundred dollars.

Acquire guide.

You cannot find any men in the town that have been westward, but you do buy a map in the town's general store. You hear that guides are looking for jobs in Virginia, so you send a message up to the governor to find one for you. Within a week, there is a guide in town, named Louis Wellesy. He says that a dollar a day would be sufficient, so you agree. The hiring fee is five dollars.

You decide to wait until next month to start the journey.

February, 1840

Attempt to recruit more townspeople, gather more foodstuffs.

Snow is still blanketing the ground of Milford at the start of the month, so you try to use this time to recruit more people to your cause. You try recruiting at the saloon and in the farms on the outskirts of town. Three men decide to join you, bringing their own clothes, but no food. You will have to supply extra food, and another wagon. Another average wagon costs two-hundred dollars, and it's another fifty to fill it with food and drink.

The snow finally melts on the 17th, and you start the journey. The majority of the town is in the square, waving and cheering for you as you depart. Some of the town actually decides to give you gifts, them being five dollars and a luxury candle. You thank the people for all they have done for you, and take a last good look at Milford. You were born there, and grew up there. Best not to be there your entire life.

The first few days are fairly rough, but everyone has a seat on the wagons, and you make adequate progress with your small wagon count. Nearly four miles an hour, and you don't need to take rests save for eating and sleeping. The schedule is as such: An hour after waking up is set aside for breakfast, and we ride to noon. At noon, you will stop for two hours to eat lunch. At eight o' clock, you will make camp, eat your supper, and rest until dawn.

The first weeks are fairly uneventful, save for you being able to see so much more of the country. Not being pinned down in Milford is actually quite nice, and you make it to the small town of Carterburgh by the end of the month. They have a hotel, a general store, a doctor's office, and a saloon here.

Try to sell gifts for more oxen (extra motive power is always nice) and perhaps another long gun.

March, 1840 (Part I)
The snow has gone from Virginia, and the cold has gone with it. Now the fields and forests of the land are green and teeming once more. It is the perfect time to be moving.

Try to sell gifts for more oxen (extra motive power is always nice) and perhaps another long gun.

You were in Carterburgh for a few days. While you were there, you decided that faster movement would be greatly appreciated, and oxen would be the best way to achieve that goal. You visited a local rancher, who's name was Isaac Reid. He had four oxen, and you bought three. Buying three put extra speed on all of the wagons, so not just one would keep you slowed down. You payed thirty dollars for each of the oxen, adding up to a total of ninety dollars.

The rancher's daughter, Isabelle Reid, whined and whined that she wanted to go along. She was, in fact, a young woman. She couldn't be much younger than seventeen, but her father denied her on every time she begged. She was a very pretty young thing, and it did pain you a little to leave her there.

Before you left the town you thought of buying another long gun. At the general store, they had no rifles. Joshua suggested that they might have some in Richmond, so you decided to head there next. On the way to Richmond, four day's ride, Isabelle showed in the middle of the road. She said that she had run away from her father to come to Oregon, and live a life of her own.

Bring Isabelle along since even if we did go take her back to her father the reward would most likely no be worth the time spent. Also Isabelle could just run off in the night or do something else to hurt the party. Did Isabelle bring anything of use with her?

Let's just hope that once we get to Oregon that Isaac doesn't come to kill us all because we didn't bring his daughter back.

In Richmond we should buy the gun like planned and purchase extra ammunition for all of the guns. Give the new gun to whoever is the best shot that doesn't already have one. Then buy extra food and drink with some of what we have left. After this we most likely won't have much money left so we should look for investors to pump funds back into our expedition. If any investors do give us money we should stay in Richmond in case there is anything to buy with it. Also we should look for some more people to join us if we can afford it.
