Netbook Inspiron Mini...Linux?
« on: September 30, 2013, 01:09:07 am »

I have a netbook inspiron Mini, (without a CD-Rom port)
I know it's easy to use a thumbdrive and the usb port.
I'm using the netbook mainly as a write-in for reports and the likes, so the distro should be able to run Openoffice (for the ability to save in .doc/docx)
It should be lightweight (because the pc has only 1 GB of ram and Ubuntu is a nope)
It should also be aesthetically shiny, because...OH Shiny! (And with possibly apps to download for it)

Any suggestions?

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

Lubuntu will fill most of your needs.

There's also xubuntu.  The system has 1gb of RAM installed, so XFCE is a go. You dont have to feel married to LXDE.

All I can add to this discussion is to go for LibreOffice, not OpenOffice.

Sigtext. Enticing, yes? If you do not know where things I have "sigged" go, this page will explain.

I favor xubuntu myself. Lxde is nice enough, but not as easily customizable. (meaning that it requires scripting to add key combos and the like)

Agreed with xubuntu and Lxde which are good alternate distros. However if you really want a light weight distro go with Puppy Linux.

CrunchBang Linux is also a very good, lightweight distro. It's not insanely stripped down, but still fast. Plus, I love the look of it.

Arch if you have a ton of time on your hands.

Alternatively you should install lubuntu as i use it on my main desktop from about 2006 as vista was BAD.
