Does population cap work at all?

Population cap set to 100.

Currently have 206 dwarfs.

Another wave of immigrants just came in.

It should yes, sounds like you had a full year of large migrant waves.

Did the last caravan make it out safely?  Population is reported by the outgoing caravan.  If it fails to get away the mountainhome is not notified of the fact that your population is over the cap till one successfuly gets away.   you can either wait for a caravan or you can use a DFhack script to notify the mountain home imediatly.

Just type this next line into DFhack.  if it works it should spit out a line about your home civ being notified.

Yes, it is important to know what dimensions the drowning chamber should be.

Drowning chamber?  you dont use the sprogs as magma tube scouts?

I concur, don't be so cruel as to cheat your legendary cheesemaker migrants out of their true destiny as tube scouts.

Population cap is only set if your liason makes it off your map safely. That means, what you should do is as little as possible to increase your fort's value in the first year if you want few migrants and try to get your liason in and out alive the first year.

Children do not count towards the population cap as they have their own setting in the init.
