Requesting Diplomacy Advice
« on: October 04, 2013, 08:30:47 am »

I probably should have done this before losing Tuscany, Livonia, and Prussia, but whatever.

I am playing an online game of Diplomacy where I am close to winning. Unfortunately, my clever attempts to try and break the stalemate always lead to losses on my end. Anyone have any advice on how to A. drive the French out of territory I rightfully conquered, B. drive the Russians out of their territory I rightfully conquered, or C. break the stalemate once it is re-established?

To be honest, the situation doesn't look very good for you. The reason for this is because France both has more navies and is in a significantly better naval positioning.

Now, I don't think that they stand any chance at winning themselves, but it seems to me that a stalemate is likely. If you had another 1-2 navies, or you asked about this two and a half years ago, the answer would be different. But as it is, it looks pretty impossible for you to win. Luckily for you, they don't seem to have enough land forces to be able to win away from the oceans.

I can only see two points of vulnerability in there line where you could possibly break through.

The first is down south in Italy with the navies, possibly taking Tunisia. This however looks unlikely, and you are going to lose at one supply center this year down in turkey (with more units required to get it back), further hurting your chances.

The second is up north in Russia. This also looks very hard to pull off, I don't really see any way for you to advance into their territory. But with luck on your part (and very bad moves on theirs) you could pull it off.

Random Tactics Advice:
You could almost certainly take the Tyrennian sea with naples (support naples with your navies, have venice move to tuscanny to stop a support from there). The downside to that path would be that they could take the Ionian if attacked it with both of their western navies.

Ah, someone who knows what they're talking about.
Out of curiosity, what would you have done had you have done in my place?

And new turn has come up.

Ah, things are looking significantly better now, I assumed that the current turn was autumn (due to a critical reading comprehension fail), instead of that you just did autumn, and that he was going to move in and take smyrna. I didn't know you had a free build either, so your position is quite a bit better then I thought it was.

It might take a while but you should be able to take tunisia with your navies, but as long as you do it before one of the navies gets moved down from the north (2 years at the fastest), your 5 navies should be able to beat his 4.
As for tactical advice, its pretty tricky on how exactly to take tunisia. I would reccomend trying to take the thyrennian with naples, but as for his eastern navy you are on your own (possibly send a army down south to help defend?). Another option would be to move all your navies up one province, and try to move greece into the tyrennian. This has its own risks (namely that it could completely fail or that he *could* take rome), but most of the options for attacking are either slow or have some risks at this point.

After that it gets tricky, if you are lucky and move fast you might be able to get to the mid atlantic ocean (which would really open up your attack options), but if he gets it he can blockade you down south, quite possible stalemating it down there.

It's hard to say what I would have done differently then you though, hindsight is always 20/20, and although your position looked strong gaining ground from it was actually very hard.
As it is though, you probably have 1 last chance to win before another navy or 2 come down from the north.

EDIT: I can see you easily taking the 17th province (tunisia), but if you don't manage to take the mid atlantic ocean, I am about 95% sure that the game will stalemate.

Dammit, that fleet was supposed to try to move to the AEGEAN sea, not the IONIAN!

Anyways...well, the game is going on, I guess.

I'm fine. I've even been active for a while, pretty consistently down in FGaR. I'm fine, except that Turkey is in a bit of a pickle, as you noted.
