Concerning Mac support: Who's in charge?
« on: October 05, 2013, 11:37:53 am »

While we are steamrolling ahead with the fourth iteration of Masterwork, I notice that the Mac OS X files have not been updated in a long time.

Did the lady/gentleman accountable for the Mac port quit? Or has someone found a way around the issue of cross-platform support?

Couple of important dfhack plugins are missing/crashing on mac and the GUI is windows only. Those are the main roadblocks. Nobody has been able to solve those, so no official macMW. Some people are running masterwork with macnewbie, it's not that hard to set up, but it's not 100% feature complete...

I've tried using this "swapping up" content between the latest masterwork and the MacNewbie Reborn pack and it failed to even launch the game. Edit (to clarify) : I've tried this method with both the v3 and v4 versions, v3 launched but crashed when I choose to 'generate a new world' v4 isn't even able to show the DF window.

I'm eager to try Kobold Camp through Masterwork, but it seems out of reach at the moment, even with the method Fricy posted about (if it would work for me), you are stuck with the MacNewbie launcher and can't select kobolds as the playable race.

I've tried messing with Wine and PlayonMac a while ago for another game and it was a failure. I'd be willing to try again I had a step by step to follow.

I've had success running wine 1.2.3 (only!) with Masterwork, both on Linux and Mac. Other versions of wine don't cause the dfhack window to appear. (I have no idea if dfhack still runs without the window, but I use the dfhack console all the time.) Therapist works great under 1.2.3 as well.

The Masterwork setup program doesn't work with wine 1.2.3, but it does with "any recent version of wine". So use a recent version to do setup, and 1.2.3 for worldgen and playing.

PlayOnMac probably helps with getting wine up and running, but it's been a while, and I don't actually own a Mac myself. (I just like helping others play MWDF)

Thanks, I'm actually downloading the latest version of PlayOnMac and giving this a try. I'll report with my experience. Anybody wants to chip in any tips on setting up MWDF through Wine and Playonmac are more than welcome.

Edit: this is starting on the wrong foot, PlayonMac doesn't seem to be working at all, it pretends to install wine 1.2.3 but it's never available...

Edit2: I'll leave that for people with more patience than me.

Off I go to play with Fricy's MacNewbie Reborn. At least I have some dfhack plugin goodies. One of these days I'll get to enjoy Masterwork I'm sure.

At least we're not stuck like years ago where even dwarf therapist wasn't available for the mac... </rant>
