Prologue
« on: November 16, 2013, 09:15:28 am »

In a previous age, the realm of Man has grown powerful.

That is acknowledged by all cultures of the known world. The relics of technology, the crumbling miracles of architecture, whatever the brightest minds of the present could salvage, all point towards it. How that ended, however...

Some say there was a big war, some say the Gods themselves stepped down as their forefathers grew too bold, or that they trusted the machines too much. That's none of your concern, though.

You're a simple craftsman in one of the larger cities of the new world, eight years after the ceasefire with Austrona came into effect. You were too young to serve at the time, and your family luckily remained intact after your father was conscripted.

That's enough for now, though. The bell tower indicates that a new day is beginning, and the rising sun concurs.

Your name, gender and craft will be required for further progress.

Ah, yes. Soap. You never exactly liked making the stuff, but it brings money - and when the alternative is buying imported, heavily taxed and heavily perfumed bars from the west, that's really easy to get. At least, that's what your father told you when he pushed you into the business. You'd think he'd want help in his own workshop. Sort of weird, now that you think about it...

You might not be the best at your craft, but with his help you've managed to secure your own, small workshop after only two years of apprenticeship! Let's not go back to Thule if we can help it, though. Speaking of which, after eating a light breakfast you should still have a few hours before you have to go pick up a fair bit of material from the mines a few kilometers out of town. You'll have to secure a batch before the merchants handling the sales run out, after all!

Where should you go in the meantime?

If you happen to try to go to a part of town that doesn't exist, it'll default to the "explore town" option.
Shall we go to the starport?

Starport . . .?

Well, you suppose it wouldn't hurt to look for one, alright. Putting some casual clothes on and preparing yourself for the day overall, you figure that with the sun's reddish glare in the west you might as well explore the eastern parts of town first. You leave your home and head off, passing by an inn, a few dozen other households, offices of various brokers and merchants... The closer you get to the square of this part of town, the less ruined the buildings seem to look, although yours isn't really that bad in comparison.

Reaching the square itself, you find that the fountain located in the middle has been turned off. It keeps breaking lately, and both the local administration and the church have it in their interest to keep it operational. Keeps the metalsmiths and mechanics busy, at the least. The road leading to a hill where the church itself lies starts here, although you ignore it, heading for the bridge spanning the valley. It's a rather fine bridge, when you think of it. Made to last. Fairly short. The square seems to continue after it, with the town hall located on the side, along with the merchant guild's hall and other luxurious offices. The city guard appears to have their quarters here, although it's not immediately visible.

Further north, you're sure there's a large market, its commotion heard even here. You could also head back west across the bridge, or climb down the valley along a few passages. You're not sure as to what lies to the west.
