I find the Darwinian approach very effective. Plus it is self-imposing and does not require much micromanagement.

Something I forgot to mention earlier - the buckets used in the brigade should be the ones whose creation was mandated by the noble being given the bucket brigade water treatment.

You'd think handing out the crossbows to brain damaged dwarfs would be a bad idea but it isn't

Yes, extra dwarves I don't care to manage or house or deal with are simply assigned to hunt.  Most die, but every now and then I get some amazing wrestler who's carrying back bears to my butcher.  If such a hunter lasts long enough for me to notice them they have earned my respect and a place within my halls.

I think this method pleases Armok.

  Did you ever consider retraining them?  None of these skills are trade skills, so they're naturals for being given dabbling in some valuable skill you're hoping for a strange mood on and then becoming haulers, or getting beefed up on a pump or through gathering or woodchopping, or joining the army.  And, because they already have skill experience, they're ahead of the game when it comes to getting attribute boosts.

I hate it when people just slaughter dwarves or let them stand around idle for years because they can't be bothered to change a few labor assignments.
