I've got a nice, long channel from the magma vent to the forges, and the tunnel which I dug the channel from. There's quite a bit of stone on the tunnel floor, and currently I have it all forbidden because I'm afraid a dwarf will fall into the magma. (It's my first time dealing with magma, so I'm being extra-cautious) There's also a gold vein, about 1/2 the way down, but that's forbidden too.

Am I being too cautious, or do dwarfs fall into channels all the time?

They fall in if there's fighting, and they might jump in if they're melancholy; babies will just randomly jump in if they're orphaned. That's about it. You can put grates (in any material) over the magma channel if it concerns you.

You can also just put floors over it.
