Fishpond - how does it work?
« on: September 20, 2013, 07:52:31 pm »

I built a fishpond, now I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.

Does "Make fishing net" task produce a fish, or does it use something like cloth to make a net that can later be used in fishing itself?

(and yes, I have queued the task anyway, I'm just not sure what to expect :P)

Making a net or pole produces the tool.  You then have the action to 'fish with net/pole/bucket' which will potentially result in a fish. (In descending order of effectiveness)

I see. Is the net a consumable item or something? I keep ordering them and they get cancelled.

They also seem to require an awful lot of thread and blocks as reagents.

I haven't been able to play since Meph updated the pond to what it is now but looking at the raws....

There's like a 95% chance of keeping your bucket/pole/net in the fishing reactions, so there is some attrition involved. Net reaction yields up to 5 fish, 8% each and 5% loss of tool, so I guess if you run the reaction enough times, you'll run out of fishing tools and get a cancel message.

Eek! I need to tell my fisherdwarves to stop breaking those buckets...

Thanks for checking that :)

Making a net requires 10 thread, so make sure you have enough. The reaction shouldn't be available in the list if you don't have enough, but that won't stop you from having the Manager ordering it up.

Usually, I just set the fisherdwarf to collect oysters and catch turtles.  The bucket is always preserved and they have a 10% chance of catching one.

Give a dwarf a fish, you feed him for a season.
Give a dwarf a Fishpond, couple of buckets, build a Fishery, and enable Fishfarming labor; you feed him for a lifetime. (And get someone to clean and prep the fish)
