Like having the 'spar' activity require the use of a "training weapon" (which is a completely different item from just an inefficient actual weapon)? That'd be nice.

Which would be a lot like how marksdwarves use training bolts.

The best method I've found for upgrading weaponry is to dump it.  A dwarf comes over, takes the copper axe out of my axe lord's hands mid-strike while he's sparring, and dumps it.  The axe lord looks confused, then goes to get the nearest other blade.  Which is always the other training axe.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

None of my dwarves ever spar with weapons unless they are (1) crossbowmen or (2) have maxed out all their wrestling stats and have plate armor.  I find it's better to train them unarmed and give them the best weapon possible at all times.  I dont' have my dwarves spar with weapons unless they have full plate and are expert wrestlers.
