Previous Fortress migrants
« on: September 11, 2013, 10:41:06 pm »

I had a previous fortress completely decimated by a wave of werelizard, and upon seeing the wreckage of my fort, dead dwarves strewn about, I abandoned. I've started a new fortress and I've gotten my first wave of migrants. This wave is seemingly compromised of previous members of my old fort, still chock full of unhappy thoughts from injuries, dead friends, and dead pets.  My first wave of migrants, and about 3/4 of them are tantruming off the bat.

I have had better luck with that since I usually abandon intact and relatively happy forts.  Then my new fort gets migrants that have good morale and are often trained in useful skills if not good military skills.  The early arrival of a legendary fighter is a great boost to a young fort's defense capability.

Are you telling me that the more fortress you have on the world, the less useless farmers you get in migrants waves ?

Joke appart, I thought all migrants were coming from mountainhome... if I get what you're implying, it's possible to have migrants coming from your otehr fortresses ? If so, this game is even more awesome than I thought.

Oh my.
How many times did I make a new world when starting a new fort … what a waste.
… now I don’t hesitate to abandon a settlement and start a new one on the same map, but I name all my fortress the same.
This mean that Tenshedkadôl N welcomes people from Tenshedkadôl N-1… possibly multiple times, since when Tenshedkadôl N will be abandoned, those will go to Tenshedkadôl N+1 …
This means I might have third generation Tenshedkadôl dwarves?! I need to trace that! (and quite possibly make them citiezns of honor in some way …)

I had exactly the same thing. I think it happens when you start a new fort in the same civilisation immediately. I got four of my legendary dwarfs straight away, three of them went insane but my legendary Armour maker survived and my new fort was very well armored from the outset!

If you start a new fort using the same civilization as the previous fort the previous fort's dwarves are potential migrants.

For one world I made my first fort in a fairly benign location a "training fort".  All dwarves got some military training (Level 3-4 in a weapon plus some shield and dodge training) as well as training in at least one skill I considered useful for a fort.  Added to this were some legendary level combat dwarves plus "industrialist" specialists who were master level or better in 4-5 skills, including either armor- or weapon- smithing.

And the next fort got an "industrialist" plus one of the legendary fighters in the first three migrant waves.  The industrialist alone was a massive asset since the fortress could immediately forge high quality armor as well as more efficient production in a number of skill areas.
