Snow.

first of all:

i have no idea of the general mechanics of modding, but recently i got an idea and i hope its not totally impossible^^

i thought it would be quite cool if the snow in the game would behave a little bit more realistic. not just colouring the floor tiles, no instead i thought about a slowly rising heap of snow on each tile when its snowing.
like rain in a murky pool, it could grow over time (regarding how long winter in that region is) from just some snowflakes that are easily trampled, to higher snow that slows down movement, up to an impassable wall of snow that musst be dug away to e.g. free the way for caravans.

Would be cool, but I have a feeling that's something that would be rather difficult in DF. I of course could be totally wrong.

Might be something to post on the general suggestion board.

This would definitely be a 'hardcoded' feature, I think.

Best put in the suggestions thread for the core game.

High traffic on snow-covered tiles would compact the snow, and thus hinder movement less until it becomes so compacted it becomes ice would be awesome to add into this as well.

I'd love to construct my floors out of ice and watch my dwarves slippin' and a-slidin' everywhere all the time. Especially when they're fighting. It'd be so goddamn adorable.

However, certain solids acting as (very) slow moving liquids, collecting and settling and spreading like water in a murky pool, is a planned feature of the core game. Snow and sand would both act like this, don't know if there might be other that would be affected by those sorts of physics. But it's not a priority and it will be a long time coming. (All that being said, you probably won't be able to "compact" these soliquids into solid terrain, except maybe as an abstraction of evaporating actual non-liquids like sand.)
