[ADVENTURER] Bug
« on: August 23, 2013, 10:19:03 pm »

Not sure if there is a topic for adventure-related bugs but...

There are Sea Monsters ambushing me through my adventures... on dry land... they might show up alone or in packs of about three or so but they just sit there until they die from air-drowning.

Masterwork isn't really optimised for adventure mode... for instance I used to gwt ambushed by grave cats who bled out almost instantly for no reason ;D

I once read on the wiki that this is a vanilla problem as well - fish ambushing you on the beach and drowning.

Yeah, plenty of things are wrong with Adventurer mode, but since Meph doesn't really understand Adventurer mode a whole lot, optimization isn't really going to happen unless a lot of people ask for it and a lot of people offer to help out. I suppose if Meph ever stabilized a version of Masterwork and bought himself some time to dick around, he could futz around in Adventurer things. I, for one, would cream myself if I get my hands on some new Adventurer content that's even half as fresh and intuitive as the rest of what Masterwork already does.

I did post this a while back, but it didnt get much attention.

In the end it comes to this: I need people that know Adv. Mode and know Modding (at least a bit). They can tell me what to do, or make changes themselves that I copy+paste into the mod.

While I don't know much about modding, I do know Adventure Mode, and what's wrong with it. And I'm sure if you were to seriously lobby for support, both on this child-board and elsewhere, you'd get the support you need. To make it happen, though, you need to make it clearly known that you're interested in overhauling Masterwork adventurer mode.

At the very least, the start of an Adventurer overhaul is to modify the custom races slightly to make them viable adventurers. Currently, Automatons are nigh invincible and do not gain experience in skills. Warlocks never get hungry, thirsty, or tired. Citizens found in towns are all naked and unarmed (I recall in vanilla versions of DF, peasants wore clothing and wielded knives). I could post a list of small oddities I've found in my playthroughs, but for the sake of length I'll wait.

At least one of those small things should be a decent launching pad for a better understanding of adventure mode and its modding. I suggest, at the very least, you play around in adventurer mode a bit, if only to familiarize yourself with its mechanics, and what you feel it lacks.

I might be inclined to fix bugs (No clothing for foreign civs is deliberate and helps FPS in fort mode. Same for the noeat/nodrink to help warlocks and other race to survive worldgen), but I wont play it, or mod content for it. I will not suddenly start and do new game mechanics, the way I do it for fort mode.

You must understand, I dont even play DF fort mode since I started modding... ;)

My favorite time this happened is when I was ambushed by a sea dragon i was told to kill... In a desert. Running over as a weaponless peasant and stabbing the defensless thing in the head gave me tons of fame. Except I was killed by a firebird while walking out of the castle (who preceded to burn the king and his guards to cinders.)
