I don't exactly know, knowing the people that play these artsy fartsy indie games which I know is going to be the majority of the people going to see this movie, probably don't even know what a roguelike is, then again, things like Dungeons of Dredmor and The Binding of Isaac did help bring it closer to the surface.

@Yerv you're probably right, for a film to get an audience you need to pick games that people know about and want to see.  I think Dwarf Fortress has enough references in gaming culture that although it might not be "popular" in the indie scene sense... it is recognizable!  It would be nice to know if Tarn was contacted and planning on having an interview with the movie crew.

I could see DF becoming a short animated series, but not a full film of any kind. Maybe just 5 minute miniseries covering popular succession forts, like boatmurdered.

DF would make a good epic, in the truest sense of the word. Though it's really just opinion, you could use DF in just about every genre. It's malleable.

I think if you're going to make a film about indie games, you can't exclude Dwarf Fortress. It is the indie game. You have to mention Dwarf Fortress because this is the game that set the precedent for other developers whether they like it or not. Aspects of the entire DF "style", from the antiquated graphics, to the gameplay, to the expansive scope, to the DIY work ethic of the creators, have all made their way through deliberate imitation or osmosis into other developers' own games and ethics. Of course, I'm not saying DF invented everything ever, but it is important enough to warrant recognition. It's like you're writing the history of cinema and you don't include von Trier.

Minecraft is a great example of another indie developer taking a cue from Dwarf Fortress, and if Minecraft is going to be in this thing, then it would be a crime not to include Dwarf Fortress.

When I saw this thread's title I laughed, because it looked like a parody of the impractical business suggestions that get posted here periodically. (I saw it as implicitly making a video by themselves, without knowing the contents of the thread.)

But actually, this is pretty cool. Worth a watch if I could get at the DF part. I can't imagine paying for it though, and I'd have to be pretty bored to watch the whole thing. Probably not much new info anyway, since it's marketed to general public.
