Do 'tile sets' slow things down?

Do tile sets slow the game down?  I noticed sometimes they make it hard to read the text but was wondering if the game goes faster when just left in ASCII ?

I have not noticed any changes between tilesets and regular ASCII; it might depend on your computers power.

I doubt it.  The power required to render 16x16 pixel sprites arranged in a regular grid is not tremendous, especially given everything else DF does.  Also technically speaking the ASCII graphics is just another tileset as well.

The biggest difference between the ASCII tileset and some of the more advanced ones is simply the size of the set; the number of pictures it contains.  I doubt your computer would feel the difference though.

Foolprooof way to penetrate aquifers of unlimited depth.  (Make sure to import at least 10 stones for mechanisms)
Toughen Dwarves by dropping stuff on them.  (Nothing too heavy though, and make sure to wear armor.)
