Up/Down Staircases

Are up/down staircases, both built and mined out, load bearing structures? Will they prevent cave ins just the same way supports and normal rock will?

However, if a tile of any sort, even eg. a constructed floor, caves in above them (or above a floor tile in a dug-out area, that also has a dug-out area beneath it), they won't stop the cave in. Meaning if you eg. have a standard central staircase area going straight down, and you cave something down on it, the central staircase will suddenly transform into a central shaft.

So yes, they do support stone from caving in, but they won't halt a cave-in in progress like natural rock will.
