Skill bug when attacking with tools
« on: September 11, 2013, 03:16:02 pm »

I noticed that in some arena experiments, but there really seems to be something strange going on when you use a tool item (wheelbarrow, nest box, ladle...) to attack stuff. It seems that this adds random amounts of experience to random skills, initialised when loading the save. I was hitting stuff over the head with a ladle occasionally, and my skill list now looks like this:

The suspicious skills are at the top, "Dabbling" (no skill name) 1xp, "Dabbling Mason" 13xp and at the bottom "Legendary" (no name) 4616/12000 (i.e. legendary+100) and "Dabbling" (no name) with zero xp.

After another hit with the ladle, the skill shot up to:

i.e. ~42600 experience from a single hit.

I don't know what this means, other than that I'm about to become a Legendary Cafeteria Lady for my next adventurer.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

That's just... weird. I've seen using a pick as a weapon raise mining skill in adventure mode, as you'd expect. Maybe it was a... magic teaching ladle?

Or, you know, the obvious thing, like what happened to glass serrated discs so long ago, where the numbers values for which skill to [use|give experience to] and how much experience to give are undefined/uninitialized so it ends up grabbing a random number from memory each time it's used.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Or, you know, the obvious thing,

Well, i wouldn't have made a new topic if it had been old knowledge or obvious to me. Although i'm not at all surprised others have already encountered this bug before.

Do you know where to find articles/bug reports/threads where this feature has been mentioned/discussed? A few searches turned up nothing, so i'm probably missing the correct keywords.

A word of warning to the adventurous: as Nivim mentioned (and what i found out in my own game) - the skill used and the amount of skill experience granted per application is completely random, apparently determined new everytime the save is loaded. It's quite normal to have very low skill increments per use. The 42000+ was a rare lucky strike, the other three rolls gave increments of 1, 13 and 0 (or a negative number, who knows). And three of the used skills were so off the charts they didn't even have names.

Probably few have referred to exactly this bug before; searching for "uninitialized" (using advanced search to select the DF parts of the forum) brings a load of results, such as the post linking the example I mentioned, but this thread is the only one discussing experience/skill from tools being uninitialized. As for reporting/discussing it, the top of this board gives a quick introduction to reporting bugs (with that first link being a completed bug report you can use as example), and the top thread gives more depth. Once you make the issue, people will start linking it to any duplicates and confirming it, and chances are someone will point out the quick fix (which should be modding in a skill for tools, but I don't know) as well. When you're done, might want to link it here so people using the forum search can find it easily.

Oh, and the reason I thought it aught to be obvious at this point was not because of your knowledge, Larix, but because of the discrepancy between the number of people who had read the thread versus the number of satisfying answers posted.
