underground lakes are OP
« on: September 01, 2013, 09:08:11 pm »

my fort has two MASSIVE LAKES, one at the 1st cavern lvl, and one at the third.

and I've noticed that it seriously messes with the FB pathfinding.

firstly, FBs instinctively chooses the shortest path, which usually cut through the lake. the lake also reduces their speed, ironically making the "short" path take longer

secondly, FBs can swim, but for some reason, when they swim like 10 tiles towards my fort, they would immediately retreat 7-8 tiles or pause for one in game day. this was no isolated incident. I've had this happen to a bull, two serpents, a blob, and a shrimp. i think one of the serpents took a full year before it got through the lake.

i think the pathfinding needs to be tweaked a little. maybe to avoid lakes.

I actually think the fact that FBs like to hang out in those lakes makes them tougher to deal with. A lot of times you can't get at them with your military, so you're stuck with this lurking threat making it really risky to let dwarves work unsupervised in that particular cavern.

Underwater pathfinding probably does need some work, but I think it's interesting to have FBs who don't just rush headlong into your killzone.

Some do seem to linger around a bit more than others, maybe it has to do with the type?

Maybe they have numerous splatterings of dwarf blood on them after visiting your home civilization and need an extended bath to wash it all off?
