Water sources
« on: September 03, 2013, 05:49:42 am »

Ok, so i have water in the caverns na dget spammed with "cannot fill pond: no water source".
When i designate a zone there, it says "water source: 0"

Good, so maybe its salty.
I build a pump in the caverns, fill a reservoir with the clean water and channel out the roof so it accessible.
Its still a "water source: 0".

How do i make water into a source?

You need to have your zone include a walkable tile next to the water source, IIRC.

Theres a ramp next to the 7/7 tiles.
Im building a well now, but still strange.

Is there a distance limit for water sources?

Do you possibly have it set so that whoever can haul water cannot path to the water source zone?  Like bridges, burrows, doors or other restrictions in the way?

I often have issues with forgetting that I put my civilians on a alert in my "Inside" burrow, and only realize I need to stand them down when I start trying to dig out a new area.

Na, nothing like that.
the moment the first well was constructed over the ramp, they started getting water.
I always thought ramps give access to a z-level below (with water for example) but appearently, they dont.

Have you tried constructing a well over any of the water you have?

Are you designating the water source activity zone over the water or over the land?  As I recall you need to designate the activity zone on the dry land bordering water, not directly over the water filled tiles.

It's gotta be a walkable floor tile right next to the water.

Code: (Side view) [Select]
F: floor
W: water

WFFF
W

Or, like
Code: (Top-down) [Select]
TTT
TWT
TTT

In both cases, you need to designate the area of the Floor F. If you designate it over the water, it will read as 0 sources.

Did you smooth all of the stone in your reservoir? IIRC saltwater will spontaneously convert back to saltwater after being desalinated if it touches any rough stone.

Ok, thats it then. I just designated the water itself.
Thanks!
