Streaming/Capture software
« on: August 27, 2013, 11:59:27 am »

So I want to start doing some let's plays or tutorial videos and throw them up on YouTube. I have a decent rig but no idea what software I should use when it comes to video and sound capturing. Does anyone have experience with this?

I use Fraps. It's pretty good, the only downside being that raw videos take up a ton of space and can't be uploaded directly to YouTube. You'll need an encoder or video editing software of some sort that allows you to turn it into a .mp4 format. You also can't separate microphone input from audio output through Fraps alone, so you can't easily mute that embarrassing sneezing fit that overtook you mid-recording.

If you're looking into it just to poke around, Fraps isn't free and the demo version really, really sucks. It's still a good program and worth it if you want to get into it as a hobby you'll stick with.

Just don't expect to be a celebrity overnight - Most big YouTubers put as much time into their videos as a full time job, and they've got the personality to boot.

Mainly for streaming (for which it's the best, and free and open source to boot!) so I don't know how it compares to fraps for recording videos for later upload, but it can do that too.
