I built mine into the ceiling of the cavern ~20 z-levels up, with no walls. The civilian watching rooms were framed in clear glass windows for the nobles and green glass for the poor and occupied part of the cavern wall and several private stalactites. Initially the arena has green glass windows around it too, but trolls quickly broke that and I kept the outcome because watching enemies dodge over the edge and explode into body parts in the mushroom fields below, among my farmers and peasants, was amusing.

The highlight was when a kitten killed a giant by making it dodge over the edge.

It did cause an unfortunate situation when a flying golden beetle with a poisonous gas entered the cavern and flew in after smashing some arena windows.
