Hello. I want to start and project!
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:32:15 am »

One day, while I was in second grade, I had the idea to start making games! So, after 7th grade, I started to finally learn a good programming language. Java Script! (I am really bad at it though still >_<) This July, a year after I started to learn Java Script, I was sitting in my dark room with only a SNES, Earthbound in it, and a controller in my hand. I came up with a great idea for a game. I don't want to get into it right here, but it's pretty good. (At least I think so..) After a while of idea making, I wanted to ask around for some help on making my idea into reality! It would be a 2d RPG based game. Not too complicated. And be very querky and funny. (A bit like Earthbound) If anyone wants me to explain more about the game, I would happily explain!

Thanks,

Hello.

I would suggest coming into some of the programmer threads we have.

The roguelike development megathread (partially servers as the "generic game development thread" now)
and General programming thread if you want to talk about programming in general (game-related or otherwise)

I searched Google because I was confident this was a copy-paste post between forums, but apparently not. What brings you here in particular?

Pick an engine or library and start learning. There's Panda3D (Python or C++), LWJGS (Java), SFML (multiple languages), Unity (Boo Python, Java or C#), etc. etc.

Although as others have stated, you'd probably get more results if you asked in the programming thread, and at least had some sample code. Programmers can't help much with programming if there's no program yet.

Well, to answer your question, I really just want to start a project. Nothing so far other then ideas has been made. (Which is probably not a good start :/)

Oh thank you! I will copy paste my first post then into the programming thread! I know enough of my game to talk about and have mechanics and what not, but I don't know exactly where to start other then find some people to help and then go from there. I should start with some sample code though.

Oh about the idea? Sure thing! Well, it would be as I said a 2d RPG game. Modern times, and would involve (getting into really detailed territory here...) a earth that has a creature in the center. This creature awaits for the perfect time to destroy the human race to start a new era of the world. It's plan is to wait until something is dominating all or most of humanity. It finally sees something after a long wait. Video Games. So, its morphs it's minions (which are 2 dimensional squares *pixels*) and makes them into video game characters. Not knowing how video games really work, the "video game characters" go wild in the human world, destroying things and causing mad chaos in humanity. Right before this happens, a boy is told to go outside and find his own adventure instead of playing video games. As he goes outside, he finds a lot of weird things because while the monster is making his minions into the game characters underground, he gives off an ora which posses things in a way. (Really Earthboundian right here!) So, you're out there having to fight off fast moving cars, shadows, dogs, and bugs. I'm not exactly sure what happens after this other then the video game characters come. I know the characters though. The boy, who is a bit like strength. Another boy, who can code things and make the code into reality via a kidnapped minion he found wondering around. (Sorry, i really want to get my ideas out here, so if it's a bit too much to just kind of say, sorry!!) A girl who is usually very shy, but can get very angry during battle and totally demolish the enemy. And a time traveler who you rarely see. Also, you defeat a lot of things by using your attacks combined with a type of music. There are 3 different types you can learn by different people. (At least as my idea goes on to think.....) Ragtime, which you learn by a guy named The Entertainer, who is in an old timey cart. The Sun, which teaches you very mellow music. And The Moon, which teaches you Classical music. Depending on what you learn, you can fight enemies in different ways. Ragtime music usually goes a bit fast and can cause your team to lose some defense because of the complexity of it. Mellow music makes the round go a bit slower, but also makes your enemy slower in movement and less likely to dodge things, and Classical music makes your team very confident and can demolish the enemy. But, the same goes for the enemy as well depending on the type. The creature is called The Administrator. You find him underground near the end. There are tougher enemies that appear, e.g. one I like to call Moderators. They are like the square guys, but they have a tie on, and a top hat. They use a mixture of classical and ragtime. (I'm not sure if I should have things mix music. I probably should. Your team could probably learn at least 2 versions of music and mix them then.) The Administrator would use Classical, Mellow, and Ragtime all at the same time, which would be a great challenge I suppose. I imagine to have a sort of PSI like system as well. (A lot of Earthbound things, I know. But as I said, I came up with the idea while playing Earthbound.) The story is to basically save the world from this "rebirthing" the Administrator is trying to make. Also, a quick mechanic idea that wouldn't be too hard to implement in once actually making a battle menu and what not, is that (again with earthbound) in earthbound, enemies would sometimes say "nasty" things to you. And it would lower your guts level. I had the idea where in battle, sometimes you can say something to the enemy. And by say, I mean you can type out a small sentence to the enemy, and depending on how "mean" it is, it'll lower the enemies defense. Also, depending on the enemy, it will do different things. Such as maybe lower its defense, but increase it's attack. Or if your comment isn't mean enough, it could give the enemy a confidence boost almost and raise it's defense. I have more ideas, but I think this is enough to say for now. Hope this isn't too much, and I hope I'm not being a nuisance by saying all these ideas and asking for help. Thanks for reading this post! It was pretty long...

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Here's the question: are you willing to pay people to work on your project for you? Because this isn't a "recruit free programmers and artists" forum. It's a "learn to be/hire a programmer or artist so that you can make your dreams come true" kind of place. How much money do you have to put into people working on this project? If the answer is none, I hope you like coding.

Also, learn to use paragraphs. Your last post was nearly unreadable.

Uh, yeah, what freeformschooler said basically.

I mean you might find people willing to help? But don't count on it if you can't contribute something yourself! Preferably something fairly central to the project. IE Code. IF you can write/art too? Great! But that's not really a central attribute to a starting project. I think you'll find it's fairly easy to get into code, so yeah, find the coding threads itsnotlogical posted, find out how to get started (google as always is a great place for this), then start work on it. I doubt it'll take nearly as long as you think it will.

Just gotta keep it up! Don't let things discourage you, don't take breaks for no reason. Those're easily the biggest danger to such a thing. (as someone with many started and failed minor projects, I know this from experience I assure you. :P)

Great point guys. Thank you! I'll start to learn more then instead of just asking for help on a not even worked on really project.
