A request from a horribly busy player
« on: November 12, 2007, 04:29:00 pm »

Hey guys, I have a favor to ask.  Between work and family stuff I haven't been able to spend more than an hour or two with the new version since its release.  However, I do have the occasional opportunity to check the forum.

I was hoping that some of you can tell me some of the amazing creations you've made so that I have something to look forward to once I have time to play.  Done anything neat with gears and axles and screw pumps and whatnot?

Pweeeeeeease?

Well, it's not done yet. But I'm currently constructing a massive water tower (6 z levels high) that will be full of water with pumps, and I'm going to channel all that underground via a single tile size corridor to under my only entrance (i build a castle XD) and when enemies run over it, i use a lever to open a hatch that will spew that water, and anything over it several z levels high because of the immense water pressure. whuhahahahah

Later I'm going to add more and bigger towers, and have a hallway with several openings lined up against each other. And when enemies run trough it, i open the gates, and the water pouring out with such power (because of the pressure) should, in theory, crush the enemies where they stand!

Dude, that sounds freaking awesome.  If the water tower idea works, PLEASE record a movie of it.

Well, an above-ground building is possible. Not on the levels of a massive tower, I suppose, but it gets by.

Ground floor. It's horribly mud-spattered and blood-strewn due to the enthusiasts that are the military.

The fully completed second floor. That along with the ground level is the entirety of the food stored. These guys are far too productive for their own good...

The incomplete third floor. It's got a chimney, a decorative floor that will be covered up by yet another stockpile (finished goods to fill the trade depot in the courtyard), and a windmill jutting out of the corner that powers the 3 mills on ground level. The left side will probably be converted to a set of rooms for the Mayor or Dungeon Master.

I've also plans for filling up a hill full of water, to see if being completely indoors excludes it from the freezing temperatures in Winter time.

I'm working on a 20-story stone tower built on the mountain above the main entrance of my fortress.  The first 5 floors are going to house my nobles, floors 6-15 are going to be a massive trapped 3D maze, and the upper floors will be trap and puzzle filled.  At the very top will be a Depot full of goodies.  Only the first 5 floors are done right now ... I'm in the process of designing the maze before I build it in game.

(In case you can't tell, I'm designing this for Adventure Mode.)

I tried the hatch thing - and had way more than 6 z levels.  Once the water stabilized under the hatch, it would not flow up out of it - even after removing the hatch.  Seems like the game saw the flow as stabilized and left it.  What did work was putting a flood gate on the channel below the opening, and putting a grate on that.  When the flood gate opened, I spewed water out of my chute with such force that it pushed a mule out of the little pit I had constructed for him.  Water shot up about 4-5 z levels and stayed there until most my region flooded and I was forced to quit due to 1 FPS.  I also couldn't reach the lever to shut off the flood gate.

My fortress of Rivergaze has a massive 16 story tower (max height), full of prison cells. It is made entirely from chalk, as is the small fort surrounding it. I would call it the white tower, but it seems eternally stained with blood.

Far beneath the surface, I am slowly constructing a massive catacombs with various nefarious and inventive traps. It is quite impressive. I plan to seal off the commoners coffins with stone.

Slightly above this, a massive meeting room. Once complete, I hope it will cycle water in a manner that means it will cause a constant waterfall.
It will be known as the room of mists. The floor will be a decorative morass of grates and engravings. Again, made from chalk.

Thats what i had wanted to do - a tall tower atop a reservoir with a tunnel full of screw pumps pumping the water up to the top.  The water would then cascade over the sides, hit grates and re-enter the reservoir.  That'd be awesome.  Even cooler would be a cascade of lava over the entire tower, but the logistics of getting that set up would be... tricky.

My next project will be building a block piramid spanning 20 z-levels.
So the base will be ((20*2)-1)= 38 by 38 squares, and at the top it ends in one block (pillar).

First have to dig out a large enough area all the way down, will take some time.
The rest of the level will consist of granaries guarded by cats and lots and lots of masons (DF equivalent of stone hauling piramid building slaves).
Maybe I'll design a sphinx as well. Now I kinda miss the Nile farming method from the old version to make it complete.

How could it be capped with a single pillar if the base has an even number of squares?

Cap it with aluminum like the Washington Monument!

I've settled in a tropical jungle and have lived above ground without breaking soil for about 2 years now. I've built a large town wall to keep the dwarves safe from crocodiles and hippos, a 2 story town hall for storage/barracks (respectively), and organically placed huts in order of convenience (so they don't appear symetric). I built a pair of watch towers on 4 leg stilts guarding each of the two entrances to the town. I recently started digging down a few z-levels into the rock via a hut with stairs in-town. I started carving out giant mandala like circle structures, but my miner appears to be stuck on the z-axis due to a pathing bug, and will starve to death if I continue.

I have future plans to build a medium sized pyramid of stone in the nearby jungle, inside which I shall make my tombs/burial chambers, and ontop which I shall place a butcher's shop as a mock sacreficial altar.

I just started getting immigrants in my 3rd year, and hopefully after Toady fixes my bug, I can get more immigrants so I can start training up a militia for hunting purposes. Commerce is kind of slow though, up to this point the elves haven't bought anything from me because I butcher the trees.

What if you dug a trench around the tower so that it rose out of a hole from underground? Then it could be WAY bigger.

After reading this thread, I have one question to ask: How f***ing awesome is DF?  I mean, seriously?

Random question - With the old version, someone had hosted a zip file that had the game as well as the two most common tilesets - Herrbdogs 16x16 tileset and Dystopian Rhetorics graphical tiles.  Has anyone yet done that for the newest version?
