duplicating diplomats
« on: August 11, 2013, 04:03:42 pm »

I guess this is a weird bug I'm trying to find a (relatively) non-violent solution to.

I am playing a modded game, so there is another civ that sends a diplomat and caravan in autumn. So there are two diplomats waiting for my expedition leader. However, after a year, I noticed that the diplomats had not left, and my expedition leader was still conducting meetings while on break. Neither diplomat had left like they should have after a certain amount of time. Furthermore, the caravans came again, but this time the modded civ (not the dwarf civ) brought another diplomat! So now that civ has two diplomats waiting on my expedition leader.

I'm looking for possible solutions for this problem because I cannot request items if the "conduct meeting" job never ends. I have thought about killing the diplomats, but I would rather try some less-violent solutions first. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I've looked on the unit screen and in fact the dwarf civ has sent another diplomat, so there are four in total.

I'm surprised there're issue with that, are the leader constantly busy or have no jobs enabled? I didn't see if the leader had jobs disabled since you mentioned meeting while on breaks.

I've accidentally had diplomats not finish meetings by having my mayor or baron working year-around, learnt to disable or assign them to most idle dwarves.

I've had a similar issue in my fortress (unmodded). Eventually I figured out that the problem was that my duchess/mayor was in a burrow that didn't include her office. Unburrowing her got the meetings going again.

My expedition leader was not busy at all for most of the year. Anyway, the problem is solved. Soon after the other diplomats arrived, they met a band of goblins, and after they were out of the picture the meetings finished soon after at the normal pace. I guess those diplomats just needed an example as an incentive to hurry up.

Well that's not very dwarven, now is it? If anything, you should be designing a ☼Machine☼ that utilizes this. You're getting free bodies to do with however you choose! This is a gift straight from Armok!

That is a good thought. I should keep a spare diplomat from each civ around by trapping them using a cage trap and cave-in (hard to coordinate though) with a kill switch for each to selectively trigger war with that civ!

Edit: Too bad elves don't send diplomats...
