I think dwarves should be able to combine most items into stacks before any hauling takes place.
You mean some unskilled dwarf poorly planted plump helmet spawn, and now only a single plump helmet has grown from a single tile of soil? Lets just harvest several, and combine them into a stack before we haul it to a stockpile or a bin to the farm.

It would also be nice if, when a haul job is created, the game checks to see if any other items (in a small radius) around the target item are destined for the same stockpile. If that were the case, it could then decide not to queue a haul job for those items, and make the dwarf haul a bin to the item, rather than the item to a stockpile.

This would also be useful for cutting down on brewing and cooking times.  If you have a stack of 10 plump helmets, you have 1 cooking or brewing job rather than 10 for 10 stacks of 1 plump helmet
