Turning off special font in Mayday DF?

Been a while since I've played and redownloaded the Mayday tileset for DF. I remembered one of the gripes I had with the set's default font scheme is that DF seems to like to randomly blank out parts of words in the text, where I have to fuss with it like maximizing and minimizing it to get the text to "behave" and reset. I realized back in the day that I could sort of "turn off" that function and make the text instead be directly from the tileset graphics. Albeit with an ugly look to them since some symbols take the place of text so what's used for the gem graphic is also the * key, and so forth. I can't remember if it was some sort of alt+key combination or if it was a setting in the files I had to go fuss with. All I know is I want to get rid of this neat text because of the disappearing lettering from time to time. If any of you know what I mean and can remind me how to mess with my settings to do this, I'd appreciate it.
