Toys for large dog with strong jaws?
« on: October 31, 2013, 02:32:45 pm »

Hey all,
This might be a bit of a weird question, but I'm looking for durable dog toys that can withstand some punishment. Our dog, a Swish White Shepherd, loves toys but always manages to crush the toy between his jaws, usually within the first hour. I don't mind him chewing, but the material (rubber, plastic) is harmful when eaten. Can anyone recommend me a sturdy dog toy? Either one that can be safely eaten or just doesn't break. The only toys that have survived upto now are those pull rope things.
Many thanks!

My friends give their dogs antlers, which seem to work pretty well. The pet stores around here sell them.

He's a swish? In that case, get another male dog and let them be happy together.

Rawhide can be risky, it comes apart into sharp splinters when chewed long enough.

From what I remember of having an English mastiff, the KONG rubber toys (the red beehive looking things) are pretty indestructible and you can put treats and peanut butter in them to keep the dog occupied.

Kong seems like an option! Antlers are a tad too expensive to use as a dog chew here in the Netherlands I think. Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming ;)

Buy the biggest cow bones you can from the butcher. My girls used to love crunching enormous beef knuckles (the cow's knees) and they were Irish wolfhounds who could probably bite someone's arm off. I remember they'd lie out on the lawn, grinding and chewing those massive hunks of bone. Make sure though the dog's teeth won't get damaged though, the girls were fine but they had very strong healthy teeth.

Rope twists. They can chew on them but are hard to break.

My dog that was part pit bull liked raw hide chews.  They came apart gradually, it didn't matter, she was fine eating them.  She would also steal big 20-50 lb logs from the firewood pile and reduce them to piles of wet sawdust in the evening.  Messy, but didn't hurt her any.  Made decent tinder and kindling when we dried it back out.
