"Settings.exe has stopped working"
« on: August 01, 2013, 01:54:45 am »

Hey guys. Downloaded the most recent version of MDF and I'm having issues getting the Settings.exe application to work.

This occurred in both the 3d and 3e versions (I downloaded 3d last night and a friend pointed out that 3e was out now... funny timing, huh?) of the mod, but the Settings.exe is the same in each from what I can tell... so that's kind of a null point. Anyways, when I double click on the Settings.exe:

And yes, everything is in its default unpack directory. That is, when I unzipped the .rar, everything stayed where the unzipping put it. So, the Settings.exe is in its default location with the manuals and such.

Additionally, my Java is up to date and so is Adobe. I don't think Adobe has anything to do with anything DF-related but the thing has been bugging me to update for a while so when I encountered this problem, I figured why not. Java seemed to be the obvious culprit but an update did nothing to remedy the problem. For what it's worth, my Facebook Messenger (the desktop application) and something called IAStorIcon both fail immediately whenever I start my computer. I feel like it may somehow be related; something internally that needs to be used by certain programs that somehow got borked at some point?

Anyways, that's all I've got, aside from the information that the failure box provides:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Any idea what is causing this? Anything I can do to make it work? Can I simply edit a text file somewhere to change settings if this thing decides to be stubborn?

Let me know if other information would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

You need .NET Framework installed.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30653, if you have Win 8.

I was thinking .NET might have something to do with this... it even crossed my mind with the Facebook Messenger issue. I'll go nab that, although I know for sure I've got it since I've needed it for other things. It is possible that it got corrupted as there have been a lot of power outages with storms in the past few weeks.

Will report back on how things work -- thanks for the quick reply!

I've installed .NET Framework 4.5 ... same issue still.

Any other ideas?

Reboot your PC?

EDIT: System.TypeInitialization errors are connected with .NET Framework. Besides, questions on this forum connected to Settings.exe not starting have always been resolved by .NET Framework.

Facebook Messenger also uses .NET Framework. If you have already installed .NET, rebooted and it still didn't work, then Windows repair or something is needed.

I did reboot my PC afterwards before posting. I can't believe a Windows repair is necessary although I suppose it's entirely possible given the random damage power surges/outages could have done.

I might try uninstalling .NET Framework and then reinstalling... there was a 1.1 version installed for some reason (? - I've had 3.5 in the past... anyways...) and I culled that once I realized it was there. I doubt it matters overly much but sometimes old versions of something can mess things up (i.e. Java 6 being used instead of Java 7 for various things, etc.).

It's 5:30am so I think the tinkering will need to wait until morning/afternoon. I'll post again once I've uninstalled & subsequently reinstalled .NET.

I usef to have this problem.

When my antivirus expire, it suddenly work for no reason  :o.
So I think it may have something to do with your antivirus.

Actually scratch that. Just did what I said I'd do (uninstalled & reinstalled .NET, rebooted, tried Settings.exe) and it still doesn't work.

I actually don't have antivirus. I'm picky about where I go and I'm behind a router which forwards zero ports so I don't really get any issues. Now and then I might use Malwarebytes or Spybot SD but I don't have any sort of always-on, automatic antivirus like McAfee or AVG or whatnot.

So a Windows repair might be in order, then. Guess it can't hurt. If I figure this out I'll post what fixed it.

At any rate, thanks for the suggestions guys. :)
