IN ss13 radio headsets have different channels and get fried by EMPs.
Ah.

Normally most stuff in this universe is EMP shielded (including IN-COMs) because EMP weapons are so easy to come by, but those borgs the company owned were hired on the cheap, and thus were lacking any such shielding (similar to how the magnetic door locks lacked any, to your trepidation). Heck, they probably took the job so they'd be able to afford some. Its a scary thought that your heart could stop any moment just because some asshole decided to throw a grenade.
