I'm trying to set up an underground farm I'm not sure if I'm going about it right though.

What is the easiest setup for an underground farm?

pick a nice woodland map and dig a tunnel into a nearby hillside provided you dont go in too deep your tunnel will have a loam floor place a plot down and watch the crops grow

Dirt/sand doesn't need flooded and is prefectly good farmland.

You can also make a "pond" instead of using floodgates.

EDIT: Woah. You can farm plump helmets and dimple cups in winter now.

That's good to know. I set up a system of floodgates and grates, I haven't tried it yet, but I do have sand on the upper level if it doesn't work out.  :)

Hmmm, I don't have any such luxuries.

Still, my overly-complex, bound-to-fail-horribly system of floodgates, grates and reserviors nears completion!  Mwahahaha!

I have clay instead of sand or soil...

I can designate farm plots on the surface, though! Sadly, I don't have any crops that will grow up there... I wonder if I can trade for some surface seeds?

My floor grate didn't seem to let water down to the level I mined out underneath it. Are floorgrates designed to do something else?

Why don't you designate a few herbalist and go scrounge up some seeds from bushes?

I think he meant pick some prickleberries or something and then have your farmers plant those.

It's hilarious, I dig a wide channel area, bunch of my dwarves go over and dig channel where other dwarves are.  Then they get the blue falling background, and end up below in the empty channel, stunned ;p

How do I fill a pond with buckets? I have a bucket, I have a zone designated to water source and one designated to pit/pond. My dwarf grabs a bucket goes to the water source then drops the bucket and says Farmer cancels fill pond: inappropriate building. What does that mean?

I believe you have to attach the grate to a lever and open it up.
