Finding rooms belonging to the dead
« on: July 26, 2013, 08:35:05 pm »

I had always assumed that rooms would be freed up when their owners die, but this appears to not be the case.  There doesn't seem to be any quick way to figure out which rooms have dead owners.  My list of dead dwarves has grown as fast as my list of living dwarves (migrants are arriving despite the danger and I had a fell mood in year 4), so looking through lists of living and dead inhabitants is prohibitively time-consuming.  Is there a better way?

Diso Faintpuzzles was born in 120.  Although accounts vary it is universally agreed that Diso was chosen by fate as the vanguard of destiny.

In the early spring of 143 Diso began wandering the wilds.

In the early spring of 143 Diso starved to death in the Horn of Striking.

I could have sworn that bedrooms at least were freed upon someone's death.  Are their spouses keeping a claim on the bedrooms maybe?

Rooms are unassigned upon owner death. If they didn't, its a bug.

Look through your (R)ooms page, that lists all rooms, that might make the search quicker

PS: Seriously, you must have, like, super-getting-lost skills. You could go missing in a straight corridor and impale yourself on flat ground if I don't tell you where to go.

Unassign every bedrooms and let them reclaim it if you're worried about corpses holding up bedrooms. You don't need to assign dwarves to avaliable bedroom, unless you want to give them specific ones.

If room's still being held, then it's likely spouse being still alive. The deads drop all ownership to their things.

Rooms are unassigned on death.  Something you might check on is to see if ghosts are holding rooms.  They would lose them when they die, and before they return as a ghost, so a single ghost shouldn't hold a room- but if it has a surviving spouse who hold the room, then later dies, it might retain the room even after the spouse's death.  Would be interesting to see if that is happening:  please report your findings!

What version are you playing? I had this problem all the time in 34.08.
