Modding elephants
« on: March 21, 2007, 11:32:00 am »

Is there any way to mod the existing elephants to make the dwarfs treat them more sensibly? Especially hunting them with the military is incredibly frustrating, as one dwarf chases the elephant while the rest of the squad watches...

Well, shortly after I posted that my fortress suddenly got invaded by 6 elephants, who walked right past my entire military (set to harras dangerous animals) to slaughter random civilians. I finally figured out a way to deal with them, by deactivating one of my few armed non-elite or champion military dwarves and setting him to hunting.

was the squad set to "on duty" or "standing down"  ??  i dont think they'll harrass animals while standing down, and they dont train while on-duty.  so you've got to rotate your squads.

as for modding to make your hunters / guards treat them differently, all you can really do is toggle their evil / good tags.  i dont think that will make a difference, except for making the elephants them selves more or less aggressive.

They were set to on duty, and they were ignoring elephants on the same squares as themselves. What I'd like was if dwarves treated them like they do other dangerous animals, like wolves and cougars and such. But I have no modding experience at all, so I'm not sure how I'd achieve that.

Elephants are currently [BENIGN], despite their reputation; that probably causes military dwarves to not consider them dangerous. You should probably replace that with [SAVAGE].

I think you could just open the creature_large_tropical.txt file and remove the [Benign] tag from elephants. Then they should act and be treated the same as the other animals, like lions etc.

I haven't personally tried it, but it's certainly worth a shot.

-edit- lol, looks like Gakidou beat me by a couple seconds :P, I took too long typing my post.
