Now, who is HFS?

I'd say it's russians. Napoleon marched too deep, Hitler marched too deep into russian soil. And then they unleashed the wrath which destroyed them.

Yes, just replace harsh Russian winter with flaming hot magma.   :)   Even DF's invaders have the sense not to attempt to start an invasion in winter.

Actually, I dare say the Clowns are the Mongols: seemingly limitless in number, highly mobile, and they will kill until not a man, woman, or child stands, before they move on to kill somewhere else; they are a terrifying foe that will chew through your strongest and best armed dwarves, who may only be stopped by clever anti-siege warfare.
Mongols: Cannot attack mountains, cannot take European Fortresses, cannot attack by sea.

HFS have no problems with these.

Didn't the Mongols do sieges as well, taking fortresses?

Repeatedly, yes. They also built a very significant navy which would have crushed Japan if it hadn't been for a highly fortuitous typhoon or two (the original kamikaze...'divine wind'). As for mountains, their empire extended across some rather impressive mountain ranges...

Nobody could attack high mountain ranges at the time. Himalaya was and is still damn big natural barrier and logistical nightmare. All other mountains they crossed.
They kicked europeans so bad that their empire would have probably expanded into western europe if the Khan hadn't died and the invasion was ordered to be shutted down. They didn't have a problems with fortresses, they had advanced siege engines. And tactics. For example, catapulting sick bodies into fortresses.
They attacked though sea, but got their asses kicked. But hell, they had damn impressive navies. They didn't lose a naval fights, they just lost against the nature.

HFS will also lose against physics.

I'd say it's russians. Napoleon marched too deep, Hitler marched too deep into russian soil. And then they unleashed the wrath which destroyed them. Nazism is pretty much like a story of a Dwarven Fortress - a peaceful start, fast and amibiguous expansion, wins after wins, then they piss off the world and the fortress slowly falls into a chaotic ruin.

Except the Mongols managed to take much of what would later become Russia, even burning Moscow, before being stopped by a succession crisis.

Common Clown adversaries would also then include crossdressing, avalanches, fireworks, dragons, and lone women.

I believe you mistook the Mongols for the Huns.

Suffice to say, I shall forever associate all dyers with Bomrek Romekas, The Dyer, who slew four dwarves (and wounded a speardwarf) and a wardog while alive, without weapons, armor, or even clothing, before rising from the dead to rip three dwarves' limbs off. Wasn't even combat with the ghost, just "<ghost> batters <dwarf>" and I look and there's a leg, a sock, and a pool of blood.

TIL that many dwarven nations (as controlled by players) are very similar to Nazi Germany.

Man. This game just got a lot more dark for me. Good thing its just a game and not real life, but still, the comparison is eerie.

I've totally made work camps where I toss the "prisoners" scraps of food whenever it amuses me, keep them just barely alive enough to keep erecting my monument. And yeah, occasionally riots spark and I have to send in the royal guard to quell it.

Man. This is a deep conversation path, I'm gonna put this down and walk away before I unintentionally spark a flame war or something.

They attacked mountains, too. But who is counting?
