I installed linux recently (unbuntu) because windows crashed 

The first thing i did was try to install dwarf fortress (linux version)

i extracted the contents of DF file to another file on my desktop

but then i tried to open the file named DF

instead of opening a window that played the intro of dwarf fortress, it opened gedit


Why isn't dwarf fortress opening?

i am sorry if this has already been asked or the answer is obvious (im a complete noob at computers)

Try this:

• Right click the DF file
• Click Properties
• Check the box that says something about allowing the file to run as a program(Under the permissions tab)

I am not using Ubuntu so the steps might be slightly different.

I tried but it does not work, it opens the file in gedit still.

Open a terminal. Cd to your df folder then type ./df and enter

I find most window managers to be very poor at handling these types of things, so you'll probably want to get used to the command line. So, if it's a permissions issue, give this a try...

1.) open up a terminal window.
2.) cd to your DF directory.
3.) Run the command... sudo chmod ugo+x <DF File Name>
4.) Next, at the prompt, type ./<DF File Name>

It's also possible that the file needs to be run with root access. If this is the case, you'll need to change the ownership of the all the DF files (or run it as root). Here's the command to change the ownership...

sudo chown -R root:root ./<DF Directory>

This may or may not be safe, so running it as root may be better. In any event, I recommend getting to know your Linux command line a bit more. Unlike Windows, just about every admin task is easier to do at the command line (but, then again, I'm an old unix admin, so I may be biased on this point). What Binarybeast said is true should just be able to cd to the folder and ./df to run it. You'll probably get a couple errors about missing libraries though if you are a a vanilla install of ubuntu

How-to for Debian and similar

On Ubuntu/Debian and its derivatives, installing 32-bit libraries is as easy as appending ":i386" to the name of the library. For libsdl-image and libsdl-ttf, this amounts to:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libsdl-image1.2:i386 libsdl-ttf2.0-0:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386 libjpeg62:i386 libglu1-mesa:i386 libopenal1:i386

After doing this, DF will run, but will complain that it cannot find the OpenAL library and cannot play sounds, even when OpenAL (i386) has been installed. This is due to a bug/feature in which there is no link from the name of the library that DF is looking for ("libopenal.so") to its implementation ("libopenal.so.1" - technically another link). To fix this, simply provide the necessary links in DF's own libs directory:

cd df_linux/libs
ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libopenal.so.1 ./libopenal.so
ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libsndfile.so.1 ./libsndfile.so

Linux

You will need to install the QT4 development tools. For Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint, this means doing something like;

sudo apt-get install qt4-qmake qt4-dev-tools
 
Once you have acquired the source code and installed QT, build Dwarf Therapist by performing;

cd dwarftherapist
qmake
make
sudo make install

And run DwarfTherapist from the command-line.
