bye bye my first fortress :(
« on: July 18, 2013, 07:13:18 pm »

Well I was doing quite well on my first real fortress. Had about 39 dwarfs working hard making our fortress real nice. But then I got this crazy idea to try and use the brooke to my advantage. Needless to say I made a few critical errors in the process and ended up fill my fortress up with water. Now most of my dwarfs are scared, holding their loved ones in the kitchen praying for their lives(not to mention the mother and her newly born baby).

You held up well fortress, maybe I can still save them and fix all this. Speaking of which, if my dwarfs die, can I use the same world gen and same spot again for a new colony?

You can never be to careful with rivers. They have infinite amounts of water.

Sorry to hear about your flooding woes.

Yes, you can use the same world for multiple fortresses. I think it's very enjoyable to do so, as it builds more layers of story. You can embark in the same region square, but not the exact same location, using a normal embark. To use the exact same spot, when you are on the map to select your site location, you can press "R" to "reclaim fortress." This will send your founders to try to build a new fort upon the abandoned old one. Your old fort will still be carved out as you had it (and flooded, where it is), and you'll want to learn (d)-(b)-(c) to reclaim the items scattered around from your first effort, but you can start anew.

Thanks guys, I am trying to save them right now, but when I try to build stairs up it doesn't seem to want to appear on the next level. I am guessing you can only dig stairs down.

Upstairs need to match up with downstairs across Z-levels, otherwise they end up one-way only.

Exactly, you can match downstairs with upstairs or down/upstairs one level below. If you want to have a large winding stairway, you have to match downstairs with multiple down/upstairs below.

Whater can turn out deadly, stairs and ramps can be confusing.
Those are too of many insights on the steep DF learning cliff. ^^

That is why, when doing things with rivers, I ALWAYS put in a safety gate that all the water goes through.  Then, if one of my safety measures down the line fails, I can pull it and completely cancel the infinite flow of water.  Saved me many a time.
