Quickie on magma forges etc
« on: July 16, 2013, 04:36:50 pm »

Evening all,

I was thinking it's probably not too much more difficult to dig down and get the metal industry started up using magma instead of getting a coal one going first... But which is the easiest way to design it, bring the magma up to the fort, or just put the forges down with the magma and have them haul stuff up to the fort? Or any other way that's the easiest?

Thanks!

Putting the forges down with the magma is the easiest, it may not be the most efficient, but it is definitely easy.  Building a good chunk of the fort down there is more efficient, and bringing the magma up may be more efficient still, but is convoluted enough engineering that I would certainly not call it easy.

Putting the forges at the level of the magma sea will be the easiest thing initially, regardless of your final setup.

The easiest final setup may be magma-level forges, with a minecart route or two to take raw materials down and finished items up. Alternatively, you can use that as an intermediate setup and then convert the goods transport route to a magma transport route once you've figured out how to get the minecarts in the magma and back out again.

I'm rather fond of slumming it in the upper layers for a while and then building the whole fortress down at the magma sea, but I rarely get that far before starting a new fortress. I did it once, more or less, in 31.25, though that fort had to run for decades before I considered it mature.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Okay, thanks for the opinions guys  :)

Think I'll start with building them down in the magma layers and letting them do all the work hauling, it's not like many of my forts really get anywhere at the moment anyway!
