Louring enemies into your traps
« on: July 12, 2013, 04:16:53 pm »

Hey all,
I am pretty well defended in a topside keep. Thick walls and numerous bridges keep me safe in case of attacks.

I have created a "killing room" with a checkerboard of steel spikes just waiting to be punched up and down into enemies above. But im having problems getting my enemies in there.

Once i get attacked i quickly close all bridges between the killing room and my dwarfs. The attackers instantly stop moving and start killing other stuff instead (random animals or stray dwarfs out on a hunt)

While i commend the AI not blindly running as far into the keep as they can, i do wonder how i can actually get them to run towards my keep and the traps i have in store.

I have tried keeping the bridges down just long enough to get them to the kill room, but dwarfs are terribly unrealible once they are in (timing is of the essence before them get further into the keep).

What can i do to satisfy the AI pathing and prevent attacks?

Chain a puppy behind an obstacle in the trap room.

Or set up a lever-controlled drawbridge to seal the trap-room, but also have it triggered by a pressure-plate that invaders will step on as they enter the trap. The lever-control is just a fail-safe.

Can you enable/disable a preassure plate from a lever?

I am only interrested in sealing the kill room when it's elves or enemies who trigger the preassure plate. Not Urist McGuffin', Master Wax Worker returning from collecting plants

You can have two corridors leading into the trap room... one with a pressure-plate and one without. Use a single lever connected both to a floodgate blocking one corridor and to a drawbridge blocking the other.

... I suggest a floodgate vs drawbridge arrangement because floodgates are normally closed and a lever-pull will open them; while drawbridges are normally open and a lever-pull will close them. That way, one pull of the lever closes one path and opens the other, while a second pull of the lever opens the first path and closes the second.

Pressure plates can be set to ignore dwarves in their options.

Another option if you have long contained paths the goblins (or whomever you want to spike) have to travel to reach the trap room is to close off the outer end after the goblins enter - and then their only valid path is through the trap room and into your fortress - whether they are attacking, or retreating.   :D
